New common ruler to evaluate bar code printers and bar code readers ISO/IEC 24458
The year 2024 is very special. It is 50th anniversary of the first bar code scanned at a grocery store in the USA. However, there are still many troubles of non-read and mis-read of bar codes due to lack of a useful International standard to evaluate performances of bar code printers and bar code readers.
On May 5, 2022, ISO/IEC 24458 “Bar code printer and bar code reader performance testing specification” was published as a “common ruler”, which specifies how to test performance evaluation items of bar code printers and bar code readers. The standard defines a standard image for bar code printer performance testing and a test chart kit for bar code reader performance testing.
The standard shall be rather used to evaluate a new model performances during its development stages in order to determine specifications to be shown on a catalogue of a new model and may not be necessary to apply to shipping inspections.
This standard enables results of each major performance testing, for both a bar code printer and a bar code reader, to be ranked into “S”, “I”, “II” and “III”, where I is the highest, “III” is the lowest and “S” is a performance rank for which existing bar code readers have not achieved at the time of preparation of the standard and is set as a target for promoting future technological development. This ranking function offers users to easily find the best fit reader for their application.
The ranking function is not for classifying total performance grade of a product but is to offer a user selections to find the best fit product for its application if catalogues of manufacturers mention that these specifications reflect results tested with applying ISO/IEC 24458.
Details of how to test evaluation items using the test chart kit are shown in the standard. Therefore, please purchase the standard first. The standard image data (bitmap file) for bar code printers comes with the standard.
